Flowers
The subject matter I focused my photo essay upon was of flowers, in all shapes, sizes & colors. The pictures are captured throughout the natural outdoors, in which spring flowers were in bloom. I chose this topic because I truly admire the beauty and happiness along with the vibe flowers tend to give off. Also, it is important to me because flowers are symbols of love, friendship, affection, accomplishment, and sympathy, so they bring back the greatest of memories and joys of life for me. The overall message I am trying to portray about flowers is that the beauty in a flower captures our thoughts and feelings that humans can't even express in words at times and people receive flowers in spite of this. I also wanted to capture the symbolism of different colors in my photo essay, such as red meaning love and passion, pink meaning sympathy and care , yellow meaning happiness and optimism, and white meaning purity, commitment and devotion. Therefore, the colors of the flowers is what brings together story of my photo essay, without it the message would be lost. Most pictures I incorporated the use of the rule of thirds, such as in the first photo where the pink single flower hits an intersecting point on a rule of thirds grid. I used the three type of viewpoints to capture different perspectives of everyday flowers in ways we don't normally see. For example, the ninth photo captures a strong worms eye point of view giving it a unique perspective of the bottom of the flower. Lighting was crucial for all my photos since I wanted the light to capture the strong, vibrant color, so the natural outdoor lighting helped me accomplish this. The lighting captured on photo six gives for a good example of this since it really brings out the texture and color I was getting at. Therefore, I think my photo essay successfully brought together the true beauty of flowers and symbolism through colors.
